Mar 28, 2023 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

March 15, 21, 22, & 28, 2023 – Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 3:00 to 6:00 pm

Attendees should have completed the Smartscape course.

Advanced Smartscape: Urban Forest Management builds upon the basic Smartscape course by offering in-depth training for landscape professionals on the selection, installation, and aspects of maintenance of trees and large shrubs. The course stresses proper pruning and irrigation efficiency of trees in urban landscapes. In a tough economy with water sources of great concern and the urgent need to reduce heat island effects, such training is invaluable to landscape businesses as competition for customers remains high.

The Advanced Smartscape: Urban Forest Management course delivers high-quality education from an expert in the industry. Presentations feature the latest research-based information regarding best management practices and standards for tree work in urban landscapes.

Topics covered include:

  • Intro to Urban Forestry
  • Tree Selection/Installation
  • Tree Biology
  • CODIT
  • Pruning
  • Soil Health & Management
  • Mature Tree Care
  • Risk Assessment & Management

The following demonstration and hands-on activities are featured to complement classroom information:

  • Site review
  • Proper planting techniques
  • Pruning practices
  • Tree measurements and diagnostic tools
  • Risk assessment
  • Species ID

After completing the entire four-class course, students will be able to effectively manage urban forest settings by implementing the techniques and strategies covered in Advanced Smartscape.

Students will receive an Advanced Smartscape training notebook and the opportunity to earn International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) continuing education units (CEUs).

Graduates of the course receive a certificate of completion from the University of Arizona and the opportunity to market themselves as Smartscape Trained Professionals by being listed in the  Smartscape Online Directory.

Sponsored by the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association and the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and delivered by the University of Arizona Maricopa County Cooperative Extension, the program’s mission is to increase water use efficiency in landscapes by providing exceptional training to landscape professionals and educating them regarding the critical role they play in the efficient use of water resources.
